80-ball bingo is a variant derived from a game called ‘La Lotteria’ which was discovered by a gentleman called John Stephens while he was visiting Mexico in the 1830s. Instead of using numbered balls, however, La Lotteria uses decks of cards. The cards have names and numbers and are selected at random by the caller. Each player uses a “tabla”, which is a board with a 4 by 4 grid of randomly created images, each of which has a corresponding name and number.
