Betclic Everest Gets First Portugal Online Sports Betting License

- June 08, 2016

Paris-based operator Betclic Everest has been granted the very first license for all online sports betting in Portugal’s new regulated betting market. The license was given to the iGaming company a couple of days ago, after passing the inspection from local regulatory body Serviço Regulação e Inspeção de Jogos do Turismo de Portugal (SRIJ).

The Wait is Over for Betting Operators and Punters

Betclic was finally able to launch its website last week after more than a year’s wait since the Portuguese government approved its new regulated online betting blueprint last May 2015. If you want to read about this trusted operator, check out our Betclic sports betting review.

The Portuguese government initially stated last year that the new online betting framework was created to “combat illegal gambling, enabler of fraudulent activities and activities possibly associated with money laundering, while allowing the development of social policies through a balanced distribution of gambling revenues, to compensate the social cost.” Now, Betclic has a few weeks to prepare and fix any kinks on their site before the floods of wagers come in for the Euro 2016 football tournament on June 10. If you want to place your football wagers, then enter the Betclic site and make a deposit.

Healthy Competition in the Portuguese Betting Market

Portugal’s new regulated online betting market brought an end to the monopoly of lottery operator Santa Casa da Misericordia de Lisboa (SCML). After Betclic was granted its license, SCML also announced that it would apply for an online sports betting license. SCML also announced the launch of a new app that will allow their customers to buy lottery tickets and check results using their mobile devices.

According to Betclic CEO Isabelle Andres, the company hopes that it will soon be approved for a Portuguese online casino license to complement its best online sports betting offering. Andres also added that Betclic is going to approach the Portuguese betting market with determination and ambition, in the face of the new tax system being applied to operators who offer betting services in the country. The new tiered taxing system requires operators to pay 8% of their first €30 million in turnover. Any wagers that go above that figure have to be taxed as well, with a maximum 16% of turnover.
